Fortkochi Bishop's house

Bishop's House in Fort Kochi

The Fortkochi Bishop's House built in 1506 as the residence of the Portuguese Governor. The Bishop's House is occupied by the Dutch in 1663. It is standing on a gentle hillock near the Parade ground. The front of the Bishop's House is is characterised by large Gothic arches. It has a circular garden path running upto to the main entrance. At the conquest of Cochin by the British in 1795, it came into the possession of the Vernedes family, from whom it was acquired by Dom Jos Gomez Ferreira, the 27th Bishop of the Diocese of Cochin, whose jurisdiction ran over Burma, Malaya and Ceylon, in addition to the whole of southern and eastern India. A small collection antiques and the other historic materials also preserved here. The people can't view all these things without speical permission.
